Esra Şahin Burat is an architect, researcher, and educator. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from Middle East Technical University (Turkey), Master of Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (USA), and Master of Science and PhD in Architecture from University of Pennsylvania School of Design (USA). Her areas of interest include architectural theory and design, particularly theories of nature, materials, orientation, space, and representation in architecture, and the relationship between architecture and the natural/cultural environment. She is a recipient of the SOM Foundation's National Travel Fellowship (USA) and the ACSA Steel Design Award for Excellence (USA) among other awards. She previously taught at Mersin University (Turkey), participated in urban design projects for archeological sites in Mersin, and served as the vice president of Mersin Chamber of Architects. She recently completed a four-year interdisciplinary research project titled “Healthy Housing for the Displaced in Extreme Climates” led by the University of Bath (UK). At present she is an Associate Professor at Southeast University in Nanjing (China).
